Definitley a fan of these books I am just finishing an HTML with CSS XHTML.

Does the book show you how to connect to a SQL database or is it mostly about defining, structuring, optimizing databases?

Also if you want cross-browser compatibility, my book is the best way to get it. I have done all the work of figuring out what works in all the major browsers and what is most natural for XHTML and CSS. The end result are design patterns that work in all major browsers without hacks or tricks.

You can check out all the examples in my book at http://cssdesignpatterns.com

Examples is the part I am looking forward to in this book.
Has anyone seen browser results like this?

Okay this may not be the best way to start this topic but I have some html errors I am getting. It seems that the tags are correct but when it displays in the browser window, I get these weird symbols almost like hieroglyphics. Does anyone know if this could be from cut and pasting text from the web??? It happened to 2 of my students in class who are using Text Edit and Firefox and cut and pasted text from the web (not code)

Thanks
Can anyone explain these to me? I am teaching a web design class and always used tables for layouts. When I took a Dreamweaver class 2 years ago they mentioned DIVs but I didnt understand them enough to implement them in my web pages. Now I see it referenced here with layouts and CSS. I have dabbled with positioning (CSS) in my HTML pages but would like to use the better method in my websites and what I teach to my students
Welcome Michael Bowers, I have recently been using and implementing CSS in my HTML class that I teach and have found its benefits rewarding. My studenst are also realizing how much more easier it makes coding
Ok I finally punted. I re-installed the JDK re-booted the computer and compiled and ran several applications with no problems at all. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP

I have checked it and there is no version number the software installed in this directory

C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\bin

this is what the PATH variable is set to

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\AGL;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\System;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\;C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTSystem\;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\bin

I rebooted as well and I still get the same error I also have the CLASSPATH set to .;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\bin just this and nothing else

This is a copy of the code for the HelloWordApp I am trying to compile

/**
* The HelloWorldApp class implements an application that
* simply prints "Hello World!" to standard output.
*/
class HelloWorldApp {
public static void main(String[] args) {
System.out.println("Hello World!"); // Display the string.
}
}

When I compile using textpad it compiles and i can use the program. The file is saved in a folder called Java on C. At the c:\Java prompt I type javac HelloWorldApp.java and the error message returned is

'javac' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

Thanks for being patient

I have installed the jdk to the c: drive on my pc
C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\bin and have set the classpath under environment variables to .;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0\bin

the program will not compile telling me that javac cannot be found yet I have the classpath set correctly.

Also when I use a TextPad my programs compile and run with no errors. How can that be? After I compile under TextPad I can run the program at the command prompt using the java command.

Any help will be greatl appreciated
