Jesper, thank you for the intern link. was really helpful. And will definitely use the search option in future.

Thank you for the detailed reply, Winston.

I am looking out for a job change and this is one of the frequently asked questions in the interviews. So, trying to get into the nitty gritties of the language. Started with String.

Might post a few more questions wrt other topics later. :)

thank you every one for providing insight into Sting class and how it works.

Came across this public native String intern(); in the String class. Where and when is it used?
the doc days "All literal strings and string-valued constant expressions are * interned." what does it actually mean? and since it is public method, where can it actually be used programatically?

I have a little knowledge about the usage of string, manipulating it etc.
I am looking for a good tutorial on the internal implementation of a string, its memory management and much more about it which I am not aware of.

I have googled for the same, I did get bits and pieces information from variuos sites. Looking for a more elaborate ones.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the detailed info, chris.

I tried using cygwin for hadoop but as i see there are quite a few issues setting up hadoop.
So, thought of using this vmware and successful partly. though this is a good way to learn MapReduce, I would definitely try to install hadoop using cygwin as well.

My boss has asked me to setup single node hadoop on windows and said that we would be using it to create some POC on how to use Big Data in this setup.
So, when I say single node haoop, is that the same as single node hadoop cluster?

Also, I have been browsing and found the following links.
http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~rshaull/cs147a-fall-2008/hadoop-windows/
This link talks about using cygwin, java and any stable version of hadoop. This seems rather simple and easy.

http://developer.yahoo.com/hadoop/tutorial/module3.html#vm
This is more confusing, it says we need vmware player, copying the hadoop virtual machine etc etc.

Which one do I follow for my POC?

Hi,

This post could be more related to Generics.

I get a compilation error stating:

Type mismatch: cannot convert from List<Class><? extends ConstraintValidator<capture#4-of ?,?>>> to List<Class><? extends ConstraintValidator<? extends Annotation,?>>>

Please let me know what am I missing?

Thanks in Advance,
Tanuja

Hi,

I have a NotNull annotation defined here which uses the javax.validation.Constraint.

a1.annotationType().isAnnotationPresent(javax.validation.Constraint.class) returns false though it is present.
a1.annotationType().isAnnotationPresent(javax.validation.Constraint.class) returns true

Is it possible to get hold of @Constraint and the value of validatedBy?

Thanks in Advance,
Tanuja

Hi,

Can somebody please tell me how this works.

String str = null;

Snippet 1:

if ("String".equalsIgnorecase(str)) {
//
} else {
//
}

Snippet 2:

if (str.equalsIgnorecase("String")) {
//
} else {
//
}

#1 does not throw a Null Ponter Exception where as #2 throws.

TIA,
Tanuja
