What are the advantages that flex holds over using JavaScript? Say you are writing a large webapp why would you end up going with flex instead of JavaScript?

Excellent, I'm a cs major and they teach a lot of java, so that is encouraging to know. It's always good to have an active community around these libraries, as you will undoubtedly run into problems with them, and a good community will always provide good tutorials.

How would you characterize actionscript as a language? Is it object oriented, statically or dynamically typed? What kind of physics and animation libraries are provided by actionscript for developing rich user interfaces?

In general: speed, stability, cross platform, security.

Hello Prentiss,

I was wondering what you think of the current state of the .NET virtual machine, compared to the Java virtual machine?

Do you recommend using nested queries, or will reducing them help reduce the load off of the database? Do you use other things like memcache to store queries that will be used repeadedly in RAM?

Please enter me in the book drawing! Thanks!

I know that Djikstra wasn't featured in the book, but Knuth defended the functional paradigm from his criticisms. Djikstra was a proponent of OOP, but so far there is little evidence that OOP has been more effective than OOP. Studies in software engineering have shown that bugs in OOP programs are harder to track down, and OOP programs have more bugs.

Do any of the other people in your book comment on what style of programming they prefer and more importantly why they use it? In particular do any of them get into OOP vs. functional?

Tim O'Reilly has said "Ruby on Rails is a breakthrough in lowering the barriers of entry to programming. Powerful web applications that formerly might have taken weeks or months to develop can be produced in a matter of days."

Please explain why these powerful web applications are now able to be developed faster with ruby on rails.

For the author (or anyone else for that matter),

What do you think the biggest advantages are that ruby has over php or java. Let's assume that we are using a framework like rails (ruby), zend (php, or spring (java), just so we can get a better picture of what the languages are capable of.

For me it was doing something that let me be creative in problem solving. There are some many different ways that I can solve problems by coding. The possibilities are nearly endless. I can't think of many professions that present a more challenging way of solving problems.

p.s. Do I have to do anything special to be entered in the promotion, or just ask a question here?

How well do you think Dojo performs as a full blown framework for webapps? I've seen some interesting features in it such as the editor, and mail app on the demo page of the main site, that make it comparable to some desktop apps like outlook, or express. Does it have the potential to be able to emulate the success of AJAX heavy apps that are designed to replace desktop apps, such as Google's Docs and Calendar?
What AJAX libraries do you think best utilize object oriented programming? I have used Dojo mainly and I can say that it is relatively simple to use and access the api, but if you are creating a very big application it can be a little limited in that regard. Are there any AJAX libraries out there that you favor for this?
Hello, I installed tomcat 6.0.16 on vista with the executable. When windows start tomcat will try and start the service, but it errors out. The only way I can start the service is by opening the configure tomcat, and right clicking and selecting run as administrator. Then I am able to stop and start the service. Is there any way I can start tomcat without having to do the run as administrator?

Hey folks, I've been trying to run through a spring tutorial but I've ran into some problems recently. When I try and start up my Tomcat server I get a message saying that the server configuration is missing.

I opened up the information for my Tomcat server, and I saw the Configuration path is /Servers/Tomcat v6.0 Server at localhost-config. What should my Configuration path on windows be?
