Hi,
As Mr.David told there is no inheritence in DTD. It may be possible in XML Schema.
when u want to use a set of instruction in many place u assign those codes to an entiity.Then refer the entity within the document or outside the documemt. when u refer from outside u must specify the location of the entity. Use PBBLIC or SYSTEM identifier for this.
u can refer a part of x.dtd or whole x.dtd from y.dtd.
Following is the code i experimented for clearing yr doubts.
Hope it will clarify the things.
x.dtd:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!--DTD generated by XML Spy v3.0.7 NT (http://www.xmlspy.com)-->
<!ELEMENT Maths (circle, rectangle, shape)>
<!ENTITY % re "#REQUIRED">
<!ENTITY % replace "
<!ELEMENT circle (#PCDATA) >
<!ATTLIST circle type CDATA #IMPLIED >">
%replace;
<!ELEMENT shape (circle)>
<!ATTLIST shape
type CDATA
>
<!ENTITY % rect "<!ELEMENT rectangle (#PCDATA)>
<!ATTLIST rectangle
length CDATA %re;
width CDATA %re;
>">
%rect;
<!ENTITY width "9">

y.dtd:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!ELEMENT draw (circle, rectangle)>
<!ENTITY % tab SYSTEM "attributeStudy.dtd">
%tab;

I would like to get certified in XML programming. Which is the best certification. IBM or CXE? Is it really worth?I'm planning to go for IBM.How much it costs in India? Is there any other certification for XML?(Excluding BrainBench)
Please do the needful.
Thanks & Regards

Hi Liza,
When u r invoking createProcessingInstruction() it will return an object of type ProcessingInstruction, not an Element. So u must receieve it in a reference of ProcessingInstruction.
Moreover ProcessingInstruction itself is a type of Node.
(ie. it extends Node interface). Hence, no need to type cast it again as Mr.PalaniKumar said.
Thanks
