I attended a training course using Hall's book. It is definitely best for beginners. Hunter's book is good for more advanced. When I had problems running the codes, I emailed both authors, and they are very responsive and helpful (do your homework first).

There is a cleaner way of doing it.
Assume A.java and B.java are both in the root dir, then
javac -d . A.java
will automatically create the dir structure and put A.class into the right dir,
javac -d . B.java - will do the same thing
Cheers
I am using JDK1.3, not J2EE JDK.
For JDK1.3, I had to download the Javax.* packages separately (not sure if they are included with J2EE). As long as you have servlet.jar in your classpath, compiling should be ok. servlet.jar also came with Tomcat.
Hope this helps
