Greg, I hear ya. I prefer to take my food home and get out the ketchup bottle.
I also agree about drivers. But I shouldn't have used the words "pet peeves". What I'm getting at here is, complete the sentence in the post's title. Gripe about why we can't seem to do some things better.
I've got another one (and excuse me if it's somewhat crude):

Both, but especially REAL Japanese green tea. The stuff that's opaque green and LOADED with caffeine! Can't get it anywhere but in Japan, as far as I know.

Whooooo! Just left a very heated discussion (Another McDonald's lawsuit), and feel the need to babble about a topic that really fits this board's theme:
How about we vent our day-to-day frustrations with the world in general and in trivial. My first one:
If they can put a man on the moon, why can't they think up a better way to package ketchup than in those ridiculous little packets. They are so annoying! If your hands are the least bit wet or greasy, forget it! It's time to use that last resort appendage (teeth). And after all that fuss, what do you get? About enough for one bite! (Me big ketchup lover).
I guess that thread I was reading before set me off on this subject.
Anybody else have a pet peeve to share?

You don't need to use a case statement. An if...else will work fine.
The suggestions that have been made up to now, combined, will get you there. (You stated yourself that you understood one part!) Just be patient and keep working. You'll get it.

I suggest you consider using a different class. One that is very similar to String, but is mutable (i.e. can be changed).

Cindy, is the "initializer block" you mention an instance initializer, i.e. is run when the object is instantiated? If so, what's the order of execution, i.e. does it run before or after the constructor?
I remember seeing "instance initializer" mentioned in my readings, but didn't investigate it.

I'm working using my current library, which doesn't include Just Java. I figured I didn't need another one, and so far it's been fine.
The book I use most often for reference is "Java 2 Certification". It's not the greatest, but since I pored over it with a fine-toothed comb to prepare for my certification exams, I know it pretty well. (I am certified now).
