What is CERTivity KeyStores Manager?
CERTivity® KeyStores Manager, is a pure Java visual IDE for managing different KeyStore types (JKS, JCEKS, PKCS12, BKS, UBER, Windows Native), Keys in different formats, (e. g. PKCS, OpenSSL, using various algorithms), Certificates and Certificates Chains. CERTivity can perform many activities related to KeyStore management and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) domain; common actions are exporting KeyPairs, Private/Public Keys and Certificates, import SSL certificates from servers, extend validity period for self-signed certificates, testing given certificates on custom protocols, obtain revocation status.
CERTivity also creates and verifies digital signatures on PDF, XM, JAR or CSR files. For PDF signatures it is covering all of the standard SubFilter values “adbe.x509.rsa_sha1”, “adbe.pkcs7.detached” and “adbe.pkcs7.sha1”, as well as providing rich information on signature verification. XML signatures can be applied to XML files, HTML pages, binary-encoded data and any XML-encoded data. More than this, CERTivity can verify XML signatures using either the certificates embedded in the signature, or using an external certificate. CERTivity has the ability to sign and verify JAR files, too. The process of signing and verifying is made much easier by the GUI, which makes it a more pleasant experience than using equivalent command line tools.
CERTivity is built on top of the NetBeans platform, covering many functionalities otherwise available with disperse command line tools, combining them in an intuitive and productive organization, offering a rich GUI, thus allowing users to maximize productivity.
This tool covers and combines many functions which can be found in various command line tools, but, it does not intend to be just a simple replacer for all of these. As the features are combined and centralized having an intuitive and productive organization, and having a rich GUI, CERTivity is offering to developers and system administrators, and to all users the possibility to spend less time taking care of low level details and concentrate on important stuff, therefore offering the possibility to maximize productivity.
New features of the latest release:
Although it is not a major version, CERTivity 1.1 contains new important features, updates and bug fixes which improve usability and allow the user to have an even more pleasant experience working with Digital Signing, Cryptographic Keys Management and Public Key Infrastructure.
Shortly, in CERTivity 1.1 were included the following new features:
Digitally signing and verifying signatures on Android Application Package (APK) files, making this version of CERTivity compatible with signing tools other than the JDK’s, such as the Android SDK tools. Also, as an improvement of the signature verification mechanism, version 1.1 allows importing certificates into the active KeyStore directly from the signature verification result dialogs for the Verify JAR / APK, PDF and XML actions;
Discovering and opening the Java(s) CA KeyStores(s) from the Java Virtual Machines installed on the current system, and not only from the main JVM, where there are more JVMs installed (for example when the system has both 32 and 64 bit java versions installed);
Certificate Extensions management. CERTivity 1.1 can create and add extensions to a certificate when generating a new KeyPair or a CA Reply (after signing a CSR), view the extensions structure at creation time as XML, save the extensions into XML template files and loading them back when creating a new KeyPair;
Anticipating the transition to secure RSA keys, as Microsoft announces that the use of the RSA keys less than 1024 bits long will be blocked. It allows setting the minimum key size allowed for generating RSA Key Pairs and display warnings when generating key pairs having the size less than the minimum value set. The RSA keys which are less than the minimum value accepted will be marked in the KeyStore tree table view in different color to be easily spotted.
Generating a new Key Pair using some of the information from an existing one;
Retrieving SSL certificates by using (pasting) a HTTPS URL instead of specifying separately the host and port number (option which is still available);
Better default shortcuts such as the F2 key (usually used by Windows Explorer) for renaming.
Apart from the new features which have been added, CERTivity 1.1 has fixed the issues found in version 1.0, such as focus lost and entry selection issues. Also some corrections and uniformity have been performed for the File Choosers.
