Hi All,

Background
----------------------
We have a back end job that is calling a Stateless EJB (service) to process a list of entries (in an excel file). Each entry in the file represent a set of tables in the DB. Hence a record would comprise of data that would be stored in, say, 6 tables. This is basically an entry for subscribing an user to a product and also store the payment, invoice details of the subscription.

The file contains around 200 records to be subscribed, each for different users.

Problem context
---------------------
Each entry in the file are processed and stored in the DB in a single method (let me call it "processEntry") in the EJB. This EJB is defined as Container managed and also a transaction attribute is set to RequiresNew for the method "processEntry". This method is called in a loop to process each entry in the file. Our understanding with CMT is that once the method under a transaction is completed, the changes are committed to the database but what happens is that, after all the records are processed only then it commits all these records. The problem we have here is that, there are certain entries that would require to check if its parent entries are successfully inserted into the DB and also retrieve its ID. Since all the entries are committed only at the completion of the service, our check fails. Hence we would like to know:

1) what is wrong in our understanding that each time the method is called the transaction is completed and should commit the records. This doesn't seem to happen in this case

2) What is the best practise for batch processing and especially in the above case where you need to get information of the recently inserted data while processing all the entries

Also, we are using Spring-Hibernate with JTA for our DB related operations.

Technologies used
------------------------
J2EE
Hibernate 3.0.5
Spring 2.x
JBoss 4.0.2
Struts / JSP

Appreciate if you could throw some light on this.

Thanks,
Srini
Hello all,

I'm trying to get information on CPU utilization for JBoss for a J2ee (web) application with 500 concurrent users and 5000 total users. It uses Struts, Oracle, JMS and little bit of web services.

can anyone, please, point me some % about memory and cpu utilization of jboss for a requirement like the one mentioned above ? Any benchmarks already available ? We are looking for this information to decide the appropriate hardware (memory, CPU etc...) required for Production.

Appreciate your help.

How do you create a distribution list dynamically ?

Is there any product in the market that handles bulk emails ?
Thanks for your reply but I am not looking for the API. I am already using the JavaMail API and an exchange server. My question was directed towards sending huge number of emails that cannot be handled by the email server in the normal way. Exchange server has certain limit above which it might crash or perform badly. This is what is happening now, the email server crashes.

People suggested using distribution list but the issue is that these email list is dynamically created based on some criteria the user selects. Please advice on the best way to handle it. I am looking for more of a 3rd party tool that can be reused.

Hi All, <br><br>

We have a situation where we require to broadcast a message to more than 100,000 customers via our j2ee web application. Is there an open source or 3rd party product that provides this functionality ? We were planning to design a queue to send the emails in batches but we are looking for options that can simplify our lives and try to reuse any existing products. Please advice.<br><br>

Thanks,<br>

Hi all,

We are trying to create a html editor plugged into a web application (J2EE), and have some kind of template/layout (just like we have a choice of different templates in Microsoft Powerpoint) which acts as placeholders to contents created via the html editor (i.e.) User coming to our web site can use this editor to create pages using several pre-defined templates and place their contents in these templates (placeholders) and create a page.

Please let us know if this possible using any 3rd party plugin or if there are any tools that will help us in easily creating a html editor mentioned above. Appreciate your help.

Hi All,

We are trying to build a Web application that will retrieve catalog information from various Libraries/Universities. These catalogs use Z39.50 protocol and we would like to know what package (API) is available to connect & retrieve information. We came across a toolkit JZKit but it looks like it is a separate application by itself and would need changes to customize it to our application. If anyone who has/had experience working with Z39.50 and had used any 3rd party APIs, please let us know. It would be really helpful.

Thanks Dema, But we are using Jdk1.4 and do not have the option to upgrade to 1.5 (atleast for now)... Is there a 3rd party package I could use similar to the package available in Jdk1.5

The search request comes from a JSP to the servlet...

Hi All,

We have a situtation where we need to crawl various sites/databases for information to perform a search. The most efficient way is to multithread the application as we all know. Since J2EE discourages custom Multithreading, we had to search for alternatives to accomplish this task.

We came across few interesting solutions using JMS/MDB. Other than using these is there a simpler way to accomplish this. Any help is appreciated...

Hi,
I have a very large file which contains data with the below format
key=value1,value2
key_value1=somedata1$somedata2
....
I cannot use database (like Oracle/Access etc.) but I could have a different file type like .xls etc. (this might change the data format, but it is ok). Can some one suggest me an efficient way to read and manipulate the file (like update, delete).
Right now I use Properties.load to load the file into memory and manipulate it but I don't think it is the efficient way. Any suggestions will be very helpful.

Hi,
I am trying to insert a Clob data into Oracle (9i) using thin driver. I used the sample code Oracle had suggested to insert Clob data (by creating temporary memory supplied by the driver). As a standalone program it works fine but when I deploy it to Sun One, it gives me a NullPointer exception in CLOB.createTemporary() method. The only difference I can see is, the database connnection used in standalone was Oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleConnection and that of the server was com.sun.enterprise.resource.JdbcXAConnection. Would this be an issue ? If so is their a work around ?

Hi,
I am using Resin as my App. server. I was trying to precompile the JSPs present in the app. directory. I was successful in precompiling JSP pages which does not have include directives but the jspc.sh failed to parse JSP files containing include directives. It gave me a 'NullPointerException'. Any clue on this ? Please...
Thanks.
