I've looked all over and investigated alot. But still for some reason I still have one doubt, becuase swings are still vauge to me.
Do all(but 4) swing components "LOOK IDENTICAL" for all OS for the same program. Or are they just consistent (i.e. their image can be customized and will look that they were made for that particulat OS) or both ?
thanks

hi all,
I read in this one web site that Java Programming language is similar to C++ in "syntax" and to smalltalk in "semantics" so what's the difference !!
Totally Confused now.

Hi all,
If the "in" at "System.in" in (java.lang packaeg) has a reference type of InputStream, then how can I know it's object type ?!
I'm wondering if theres a way to see the .java files of the API JDK 1.3 library provided by sun also..
thanks
Hi all,
If a Vector class are thread safe, then how come it's methods aren't declared synchronized in the API documentation ? Is there another way for Vector class to be thread safe ?
thanks.
Hi,
Before I type startup.bat to run tomcat should I disconnect the internet? Note that I'm using tomcat on my personal machine with win98.
Thanks
By the way, your Java2(Exam Cram) which I got from my local bookshop helped me to take my Java Programmers Certification. Thanks for the help

Hi all,
It's about tomcat.
I've a win98 OS and since my autoexec.bat file is correct (JAVA_HOME, TOMCAT_HOME, CLASSPATH, PATH)
1- How do I know that when I run "startup.bat" in my "c:\tomcat\bin" that tomcat has started properly
2- Also how exactly do I run servlets after starting tomcat
I've spent more than a week trying to figure these darn things out, but the more I read, the more mixed up I get...wierd ha..!

Thanx prasad, but whats worrying me, is that my classes directory is NOT in c:/tomcat/classes but its in c:\tomcat\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes
So how can classpath in tomcat.bat be set to
set CLASSPATH=%TOMCAT_HOME%\classes
where TOMCAT_HOME is c:\tomcat only ?!??!

I have installed Tomcat 3.1 and followed the instruction as suggested by jakarta.apache.org. plus I also went through javaranch
I am trying to start tomcat using 'c:\tomcat\bin>tomcat start' script after setting all environment variables. But i am getting "ERROR 207: The Requested URL Could Not Be Retreived" if i type http://localhost:8080/ on browser.
How do u know whether the script ran successfully and server is running or has even started? In my case it opens a new dos window and close it immedialtely. I cannot see what is happening in new window.
I also have a doubt on classpath with I set to
set CLASSPATH = %CLASSPATH%;c:\jdk1.3\lib\tools.jar
...I hope it's correct
Could somebody help me in configuring tomcat.
Thanks in advance

Hi Frank,
what's the difference between running Tomcat on it's own, or Tomcat with Apache ? Is one of them a web server and the other not !!
I've gone through some of the posts in javaranch, and I'm not yet clear on one particular thing.
Do I need to install Tomcat to run servlet and jsp programs, or do i have to use apache with tomcat to run those servlets and jsp programs
Thanx
