I apologize about my earlier posts. I was frustrated by dealing with some HR folks and just wanted to vent a little. First time I've been called a whiner. I just had some issues with this whole drug testing thing in general. I realize that in this environment a person's views don't really matter and I must "go along with the program." I've peed in a few bottles in the last week and aced all my technical interviews. Thanks.

I think I should just be more selective about where I choose to work. I got into computers as a hobby and it was fun just like playing my guitar. I worked my way up on the systems side and got up to some very high paying gigs. I have made a transition into software with the intention of creating my own company within the next year or so. In the meantime, I thought I'd go out and do some software projects other than my own and I've been running into all this snooping by potential employers. It has been somewhat shocking since I just thought there would be more attention paid to technical skills.

I guess I don't understand what a credit report has to do with skills. As far as the drug screen, it seems as if they approve of some drugs since I've been taken out for drinks after an interview. There must be some company that is more interested in talent rather than my personal life and I'd rather try and find one of those. I was told by some companies that they did require Sun/IBM certifications to work there. That's why I went and passed them. I guess it just depends on which company you apply to.

Now they want body fluids, fingerprints, and permission to run a credit check. This is for an entry level position that I was going to do short term. I'm not applying for a loan and this is not the CIA or Pentagon either. Should I enroll in truck driving school? I've passed SCJP2, IBM WebSphere,all the BrainBench Java exams and I'm still asked to do all this.

I was talking about recruiters on this one but I've noticed that there is much grilling about work history that is non-technical. Is this common or am I just talking to the wrong people. I feel like I'm on trial for some crime.

I've noticed that even after passing Sun and IBM exams that I'm still asked to take technical exams before interviews. Some have asked me to take 1.1 Java too. Is this a common practice? Do the Sun and IBM certifications have less weight than BrainBench for some reason?

I'd like to be able to serve a PDF catalog a page at a time. Right now the application sends the whole catalog to the client. I think I should be able to use servlets to accomplish this and improve the performance. Any ideas?

I just cleared the exam and I agree that it is difficult. I also passed Brainbench (closed book). The kind of work I've been doing with Java has all been servlets,EJBs and that sort of thing so I found this Java2 exam a little different. But anyway, Congratulations to you !!!

Thanks to everyone for the help. Special thanks goes to the folks at JQPlus who really helped. They have an excellent product and have great service. I just passed the SCJP2. What really stood out on this exam was 7 I/O questions and 7 on Threads. The rest were pretty well spread out among the topics.

Can't get the applet to run on this box. I've checked all the security settings. MS wants me to download a MSJVM but I really don't know if this is a good idea since I have Sun's on here. The applet loads and runs fine on my other box with WIN98 and it ran on my laptop with 2000. Does anyone know what else I can check to get it to run?

I got to the exam site 30 minutes early but they didn't get me started until about five minutes after the start time. From the beginning of the exam all of the questions seemed foreign to me. Even though I had studied hard on threads, I only got 14% on threads. I was consistently scoring 100% on threads in mock exams. I don't recall seeing any questions on the exam that were similiar to the ones in the mocks. There were at least six on i/o and I only got 60% on them. This was another area that I thought I'd studied well. I also scored 0 on gc and I also think I understand it too. I'm really shocked as are some others who had studied with me. My highest scores happened to be in areas that I thought I may be weak such as awt. I do remember that all the code seemed to run together and it took a while for my nerves to settle. I've also got friends that have had trouble with the exam on brainbench but I cleared that one.
Does anyone know of any mocks with the new format? It seems like 90% of my exam was reading code. It took a lot of time going back and forth to the answers and my mind just went totally numb. Now I'm really scared because I don't have a good strategy. What I tried didn't work at all. I just feel terrible about this.

I studied an average of 4 hours a day for 6 months using RHE, Exam Prep and others. I consistently scored 100 on round up and in the 80s and 90s on the mocks. Yesterday I took the real exam and managed only 35%. I've never scored this low on any mock even in the beginning. I'm looking for advice on how to prepare for the exam because I'm not doing something right. I did pass the Java2 exam on brainbench.
