Can you run a portlet in a browser tab? So, if an had an app with several tabs, is it possible to run portlets in each tab?

Sorry for the confusion. I think what I am trying to ask is: Is it possible to create a portal based website using portlets w/out using a portal server like Apache/LifeRay/JBoss? If so, is the effort "large" or would you just recommend using a portal server?

Does anyone have a pro's & con's list or can provide some insight on the effort it would take to build one from scratch?

Can you use web clipping to, basically, run two similar apps in parallel within a portal? The reason I ask: If you needed to run parallel for reasons of moving functionality from the "old" app to the "new" app in phases, can a portalhelp with aggregating both apps into a single interface?

Using Host Access Transformation Services, one you create a mainframe portlet, can you navigate through the mainframe screens that are in the portlet as if you were in a regular mainframe session?

It'll probably be IBM, at least for the portal. JBoss for the workflow & rules engine. Hasn't been determined yet.

We are in a process of reviewing portals, but want to implement a workflow and business rules engine as well. Just making sure that this architecture has been successful?

Do they play nice together? If so, can someone provide me with an architecture diagram?

All the apps would be on different servers(physically). So, if the resource/object can be used for all three, where would that reside?

Hi! When running multiple Struts applications, if the same object/functionality can be identified across all of the apps, how do you decouple that from one of the frameworks to share among all of the apps?

Can someone explain, at a high level, how they might/might not work together or point me in the right direction?

Basically, we have a large number of apps that use Struts, but mgmt is asking about RIA + SOA and if all 3 are compatible. Yes? No?

Ernest Friedman-Hill wrote:Two applications can "share code" and be installed on two different machines, two different operating systems, two different continents. Usually when two applications "share code" we mean that some of the source code ends up being compiled into the two apps (or copies of a common library are used by both); they don't need to share any physical entities at runtime.

Here's where I'm sure you mean something different. So are you thinking about a single server with two web applications running on it, one pointed inward, and one pointed outward? There's certainly no reason why two such applications couldn't share a directory full of common code libraries; those libraries might make up the bulk of the application, or even all of it.

Now, there are all kind of things that could be different about the two applications, which is different from must be different. Maybe the two use different mechanisms for user authentication, perhaps. They might use separate databases, so they'd need different drivers or different configuration.

This is pretty much the answer I was looking for. Thanks! Sorry about not being more specific.

Yes, one would be behind the firewall(intranet) for internal use and one for public use(internet). But if they are really no differences other then security, I guess my question should have be: can 2 different applications share the same code? If so, would the shared code be treated as a 3rd app?

They both would have their own architectures, but reuse code that is needed in both? Where would that code be located(the code that they would share)? Would this be a scenario where SOA is predominant?

Yeah, sharing code, but one app would be on the internet and one on the intranet and possibly not on the same server. They would share some functionality between the two apps.
