Hi Everyone,
I took the exam last week and passed with 98% score. Thanks a lot to javaranch. It was very helpful in my preparation.
Though I am a member of Javaranch, I actually didn't get involved in the forums for questions and answers. I was a silent viewer of the various questions and answers that were discussed in the SCJP forum.
I used the book from Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates.
This is how I prepared :
- Went thru the chapters on K&B once thoroughly to understand the fundamentals. (there was a long break after this actually)
- Did a second read while marking through the important sentences/lines etc. Also circled some tough exercise questions.
- Visited Javaranch - searched for discussions relating to my weak areas
- Went through the JLS for few areas (casting, promotion etc.)
- Used the mock exam list from Javaranch/Maha Anna's and started to take the mock exams (in no exact order)
- At the end of each mock exam, for each question when my answer was wrong, I used to make a point of whether it was a careless mistake or something that I didn't know. If it was something tricky or new, then I used to make a note of it(study note sort of).
- Once I started to see that I am not learning anything new and the answers are wrong because of carelessness, I decided to take the real exam, because I was sure I will not make such mistakes in "real" exam.
- Before the real exam, I went through the K&B third time - this time only browsing thru the marked sentences, circled exercise questions. I also went through my mock exam notes..
that's it. Gave the exam. Actually it was not as tough as some of the mock exams. I had 15 minutes for review.
Other hints :
- There are some mock exams that give wrong results. So make sure they don't actually confuse you. So double check when you have doubt on such questions. You can do this by browsing thru Javaranch and/or by actually testing by writing a java program.
- whenever in doubt and didn't get satisfactory answer, I used to test it through by writing a java program.
- If time permitted or if I had known, I would have went through JLS at least once fully after the first read of K&B. Its very essential for understanding the fundamentals in depth.
Regards,
Bala.
