You want a free and good XML Editor ?

I think you can't have both, XMLSpy is "free"
for personal usage (they will use your email for ads) but it costs about 900$ otherwise, Some products offers some limited and free versions. May be this is enough ? But why not to get a non free but low cost product ?? Any companies can buy one or several licenses, a product is complex to maintain and without money this is impossible to do a good job. If you want something for learning the basic try any free editors it should be enough, but if you want something to the work then consider the cost and the risk to use a non maintained editor. People want something free and want also the quality, this is an utopia for applications and finally they waste time and cost using poor applications...
Hi,

For me no this is not a good approach but this is a possible one. May I know if you use a big document ? In another case a DTD or a W3C Schema is required.

Also check your parser properties, there's may be a solution inside. For Xerces there's a lot of properties and I wouldn't be surprised to find your need. -> http://xml.apache.org

You have the following feature for Xerces :

The white space cannot be ignored automatically if you don't have a schema or a DTD. So the reply is No you can use this flag without a schema.

This release increases the ability of the context sensitive content assistant driven by XML Schema and DTD, mainly for attributes and for the element view part. Internationalization is token into account in english and french. Due to a new packaging, the user can add easily any languages. Many improvements have been added to the API, thus the user can control any GUI parts like the initial divider location... Many bugs have been fixed too.
