I am bit rusty with Java and looking for any advice to meet following requirement -

We need a utility which can connect to several databases or network file system locations, then search for a text in all locations. Example - Look for a phone number or name in DB2, Oracle, Some log files, Excel file and so no. Then present results back to the requester.

Beyond establishing JDBC collections, the utility should workout schema structures, table names and formulate dynamic queries to interrogate data. Any thoughts please?

My comment was meant to point out a simple fact: folks who bet their careers on Java staying popular will lose.

HaHaHa... Very true. I think most of us who have spent few years in the industry know this already and probably worked with few other languages and technologies. My concern is anyone working hard to master java might be disheartened with such comments, which are based on speculations at this stage.

For our young friends, keep up the hard work and master at least any one language. Carry on java route if you have committed.

About the locomotive example, bright people who mastered steam engines went on to design internal combustion engines. Something we still use on roads and tracks! Some master one thing others jiggle many things. Winning and loosing is individual’s perspective of how they see things.

You guys are right about language evolution and that something will eventually replace or extend even the best language around.

My personal opinion, don’t feel too pessimistic even if IBM deal goes on. Think about the roots of java, dependent tools and its industry reach! Something we didn’t have a decade back when abolishing a language.

I don’t see a burning issue with Java as it stands to call for a replacement. If you are bored with it, try something new for a change, but make no mistake, Java is going to be around for years to come whether we like it or not.

Finally… got my results on both cert and assignment databases. Passed the Exam!!!
Thanks to JavaRanch and the ranchers.
Also, the date posted on the cert manager site is wrong. I uploaded part 2 on 19th december and did essay on 21/12/2008.
Hi Ranchers,
Could anyone help me understand the results for SCEA p2/3? I gave both parts in december after a short preparation and can see following result in cert manager site.

Test: Sun Certified Enterprise Architect for Java 2 Platform Enterprise Edition Technology Part II (310-061)
Date Taken: 2008-12-30 13:18:39.830
Grade: P
Score: 82
Comment: n/aThis report shows the total points that could have been awarded in each section and the actual amount of points you were awarded. This information is provided in order to give you feedback on your relative strengths on a section basis. The maximum number of points you could have received is 100, minimum to pass is 70. Class Diagram (44 maximum) .......................... 36 Component Diagram (44 maximum) ...................... 34 Sequence/Colloboration Diagrams (12 maximum) ........ 12

The question is do you see score for P3 separately or is this combined score for both assignment and essay exam. What confuses me is it says part 2 and no mention of part 3 on any of the result sites.
I did not mention EJB version anywhere in my assignment. I remember few others did the same. I think you can safely assume EJB3.0 and if you have to dive into version specific details you are probably overdoing it.
Definitely the new one, which is JEE5 based. I dont think you can buy vouchers for the old one now.
Lars / Sankar,
Many thanks. Appreciate your input. I had similar advice as Sankar. So I guess Ill be sticking to the expected technologies. But Ill also do a parallel solution using JEE5 just for my satisfaction.
Kinda tricky to explain. I did P1 some 2 years back and bought voucher for part 2 immediately. Early this year Sun sent an email saying this exam is now off and you need to buy part3 voucher now. So that's when I bought part3 voucher as well.

I dont want to justify being a slacker, but married men with couple of kids would understand where I am coming from.

So I guess I just need to finish both parts before 31st December, I mean 24th.

I would be interested to know if anyone has referenced JEE5 technologies for the old SCEA part 2/3. Wonder if you could use JSF/EJB3/JPA to design FBN system.

I would go with Adne on this. Looked for business definition of flight segment and it is used synonymously with flight leg.
Ya UML the Patterns is sensible.
