I agree with Vishnu Prakash... You should start with Head First Servlets & JSP.. and My suggestion to you is that you start it with Servlet part rather than doing JSP.. Actually JSP compiles into Servlet so you better start with Head First Servlet Part...

Thanks,
Siddharth

Hello all,

I am making an chat application. Actually, most of the part has been completed successfully. The main problem that I am facing right now is that each and evertime when I load my client I have to specify the server's name or it's IP address for URL Connection. One of the biggest limitation of my application occurs here.

When I changed my application from one LAN to another LAN I have to specify it's servers's IP address.... so my application become hard-code here..

So, I want to know that is there any way to get directly server's name or it's IP when my client loads.... It doesn't matter that it has been changed to another network or not....??

Hello sir,
I am developing a chat application using JSP and Servlets. Currently we have reached a stage where the common ie general chat works quite fine using servlet as message transporter

Now we are trying for the one to one chat module in the same.

if you could tell me that is it possible to use SIMULTANEOUSLY :the HTML forms action attribute to call a servlet & make available the page for sending the message continuosly in front of the user as its for a Chat Application.

I have tried using XMLHttpRequest concept which can simultaneously call a server side component and also makes visible HTML page on which the user is currently working.

As i've seen some examples on the internet using this concept but in all of them common thing was that they were only "GETTING" from the server side like the search engines & not posting anything.

So is it possible to use Ajax concept to "POST" on the Serverside as at present i'm not able to even store the messages on the server side which previously got stored.

If you do have another fruitful idea that i could use to send a one to one message without the usage of servlets and using any new concept that you suggest then plz tell.

So please guide me how to approach.

Waiting for your reply.....

Thanking you,
Siddharth

Now once my all the instance variable inside the called class have been initilized. right?? but if I will call that class againg by declaring the another object it gets re-initilize. So If I want to stop the instatnce variable from initilizing after once it gets initilized...what should I do?

Thanks for reply,

Yes, you are right then I am using single readObject() to read the arraylist. But actually what happned that before reading the arraylist I was reading the boolean value from the stream.. so now after reading it I want to clear the input sream . so is there any method like flush() or something with the inputstream so I can flush out the boolean value and then going for reading array list..

Hello all,

I was trying to read an arraylist from an inputstream... which was sent by servlet to my swing client... During this it threw a OptionalDataException on my Tomcat console.. I know that When I am try to read the object when the next element in the stream is premitive data type then this excepion is generates.. But I don't get exact idea that why this is happening b'cz I am only trying to read an arraylist .. and there is no premitive data type..

Hello
thanks for the replies

Actually the scenario is that even when i have placed the .jars from the netscape package which contains all the necessary classes to build a application to add the entries , into the servlet container ie i could say in "lib" folder even thn its not able to find that package

It is a compile time error ::::
constructor LDAPEntry(String dn,LDAPAttributeSet attrib)
not found
LDAPEntry class error

But the contructor that is showing error is already present in LDAPEntry class of netscape source

And when after this comment this line of the code to ad the entry then there appears another error of class not found

What might be the problem according to u all

Hello all,
I am developing a chat applicatiion in which I require to add the entry fof the user to LDAP directory after the authentication via servlet.

Now I am using Apache tomcat as the web server to execute the servlet and I include the netscape.ldap.* in the servlet to import the necessary classes of the netscape sdk.

But the servlet is not able to find the package when the package is very much present and the required classpath is also set

Actually I am having a LoginServlet which calls Add.java class (which includes all the necessary steps to make the ldap entry ie LDAPEntry,LdAPConnection as well as adds the entry to ldap directory) by making an object of the same.

But the LoginServlet after importing the netscaoe.ldap.* package is not able to find classes (ie LDAPEntry,LDAPConnection)

Questions:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

1. So where should I place the package netscape.ldap.*

2. What to include in the servlet code

3. Where to put netscape .jars files in the container of Apache

4. How to make netscape.ldap.* reachable

Thanks for your reply...

I am able to store the name of the user inside the arraylist, but the problem that is i am currently facing is that it stores one name only at a time... I have already mentioned that for another user I am opening another Login window. So it gets reset when I do the login from the another window..

What is the reason behind it..? Hope you will help me regarding the same??

Should I edit my web.xml or I have to modify it?

Hello all, I am making an chat application, in which I am mainting the current login list to an array.. which is defined in Chatter.java. Now, I am invoking the addChatter() and getChatter() from that class to add and retrive the currently login user's list...

But when I login from another machine, while one is login it doesn't show me the all the list..i.e. 2 users. It shows only the last user that has been login . One of my friend says that it's an scope problem that u have to make it as whole application scope..that anyone can use that array.. without it is being initilized.. and for that you have to store that array somewhere in servlet context..

But I don't know that how to store and retrive the string array and its element from servlet context()..

So, please help me regarding the same....

Thanks Neeraj for replying me.

Actually I am not calling the servlet from my applet but it's a swing application. Now , I have all the thing workig nicely that I am able to send request from my swing app. to servlet and getting response back from the servlet...

Now, a question that is giving me little bit harrasment is that if I want to call a method which is declared inside servlet and I want to call that method directly from my client application by just connection it with URL...So is it possible....???

Another question is that how many streams I can open in a servlet to talk with the clients...?

Thank You.
